Week 5 (11/22)

CONWAY, SWAYZEE DEFENSE CLAW PANTHERS WITH SECOND LOSS

In a contest that saw record participation (20 players!), the Red Dawn Swayzees regained their defensive prowess and Conway scored four touchdowns as the Swayzees defeated the Polk High Panthers for the second time in three games, 7-2. On offense, the Swayzees were led by QB Mulligan’s four touchdowns and receiver Conway’s three touchdown receptions. On defense, Red Dawn stuffed the vaunted Polk High rushing attack and caused six turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Polk High still leads the season competition 3-2.

Summary

On the first possession of the game, Swayzee QB Moose tossed a deep 3rd down pass to Conway that Conway brought in and carried more than thirty yards into the endzone for the game’s first touchdown. On the first Panther drive, QB Carroll fumbled a pitch that was scooped up by Swayzee linebacker Conway on the bounce and returned into the endzone to put the Swayzee’s up 2-0.

Starting again on their own ten yard line, the Panthers moved the chains before running back Tessel ripped off a big run down the sidelines and into the endzone to put Polk High on the scoreboard. Red Dawn responded on the next drive with an epic 4th -and-15 50-yard bomb from QB Mulligan to Conway for the score to put Red Dawn up 3-1. A few punts later and Polk High would take possession of the ball right before half time. QB Carroll would then throw an interception to safety Mulligan, who would lateral the ball to a number of players before a recovery by Polk High would end the half with the score still at 3-1.

In a second half that was marred by turnovers, excessive punting, injuries, and apathy, Red Dawn would begin with safety Moose intercepting a pass from Panther QB Zoeller. Conway would then take over at QB for the Swayzees and toss a bad pass to Panther safety McNulty. On the next drive, Conway responded by knocking the ball loose from Panther running back Pete, allowing Moose to recover the fumble. Red Dawn QB Mulligan would end the turnover circus by tossing a TD pass to Conway in the corner of the end zone to make the score 4-1 Swayzees.

A Panther punt later, Swayzee QB Mulligan would again drop back with the ball and toss it towards superhuman receiver Conway, only to have the ball intercepted by Panther cornerback Zoeller. Panther McNulty would take over as QB and almost immediately throw an interception to Swayzee cornerback Dan, who would return the interception for a touchdown to give the Swayzees a comfortable 5-1 lead.

After another Conway punt, the Swayzees would then give the reigns to QB Conway again, who would throw an errant pass to safety McNulty. Panther QB McNulty would return the favor by taking the snap and throwing another haphazard pass, this time intercepted by safety Moose. QB Mulligan took over and hit Swayzee receiver Nate in the end zone to bring Red Dawn within one touchdown of victory.

After another Panther punt, QB Mulligan tossed a short pass to Conway, who galloped to the endzone before a hit by Panther linebacker Carroll popped the ball loose and into the hands of Panther cornerback Bongus. Bongus then drove to the endzone on a forty-five yard I-will-not-be-denied rumble to bring the dejected Panthers within four.

Eventually the Swayzees would take over the ball and drive down to within twenty yards of the endzone, whereby QB Mulligan would toss his fourth touchdown of the game, this time to Swayzee receiver Moose. This reception ended the game, with the Swayzees beating the Panthers soundly, 7-2.
